Electrical and Electronics Engineering Laboratory:

The Electrical Engineering deals with the study and application of electricity, electronics and electromagnetism, which includes all large-scale electrical systems mostly, power transmission and motor control. Electrical Engineering has gone from simple electric circuits of Edison and Tesla through Rocket science of Bode and Nyquist to the complexity of IC, Satellites and Communication network. The demand of electrical energy in our country is increasing at a very fast rate and this necessitates the need to generate more power. Thus, the role of electrical engineers becomes all the more important in today’s scenario.

We are equipped to provide prospective engineers with the necessary training and knowledge to enable them to make a meaningful contribution in this area. Initially, the programme provides students with a broad base on which their specialist knowledge can be built. The latter years have been designed to produce professional engineers with a good working knowledge of analogue, digital and power electronics, electrical machines and power system with the emphasis on applications. The Department has an excellent infrastructure to promote a congenial academic environment to impart quality education with well-equipped laboratories and a team of qualified and dedicated faculty members.

The Department has a well-developed Research & Development Cell guided by dedicated faculty members. It also has adequate skilled and self-motivated technical staff. We have developed Industry Academia Cell also. The Department has strong tie ups with industry and one of the advantages this holds for our students is the fact that they are in demand; not only in the local market, but internationally as well.

Relay and High Voltage Lab

Quick Stats:

Today, the quality of life has reached such a state, that our living is practically unthinkable without electricity. Electricity is, perhaps, the third most important commodity, coming next only to air and water, for the existence of life. All of us are aware that load centers are usually far away from the generating stations, which are located in remote areas depending on the type of generation. To avoid unnecessary losses over long distances, power is invariably transmitted at higher voltages. In fact, the country is entering a stage where transmission has reached Ultra High-Voltage (UHV) levels. All this necessitates the development of appropriate insulation materials and their use in High Voltage power apparatus. Their assessment calls for a High-Voltage laboratory. A high-Voltage laboratory needs to be established to carry out fundamental studies on insulating materials, to carry out the performance evaluation of proto types and also to assess the condition of High-Voltage power apparatus before their erection and installation.

High Voltage Research Lab

Quick Stats:

India has gone for 765 KV AC transmission and ± 800 KV DC transmissions with other intermediate voltage levels of 400 KV, 220 KV, 132 KV and 66KV, 33 KV and 11 KV at the distribution level. All the electrical equipment’s operating at all voltage levels must conform to the IEEE/ISI standards of insulation level. This requires the testing procedure to be carried out at the industry or the institutions to test the designed levels of the insulation. Therefore, there is essential requirement of HV labs for the testing purposes.

LIFI – Light Fiedelity

LIFI - Light Fiedelity

Li-Fi is a wireless communication technology which utilizes light to transmit data and position between devices.Li-Fi is a light communication system that is capable of transmitting data at high speeds over the visible light, ultraviolet, and infrared spectrums. In its present state, only LED lamps can be used for the transmission of data in visible light.the technology is similar to Wi-Fi — the key technical difference being that Wi-Fi uses radio frequency to induce a voltage in an antenna to transmit data, whereas Li-Fi uses the modulation of light intensity to transmit data. Li-Fi can theoretically transmit at speeds of up to 100 Gbit/s. Li-Fi’s ability to safely function in areas otherwise susceptible to electromagnetic interference (e.g. aircraft cabins, hospitals, military) is an advantage. The technology is being developed by several organizations across the globe.

Solar Powered Automatic Grass Cutter & Electrostatic Energized self cleaning of Cutter

Moving the lawn on regular basis is a very important part of proper yard care. A properly cut lawn is something that is very pleasant to see. Cutting the grasses on a regular basis helps keep the grass short, neat and even. This also gives our lawn a very neat and orderly appearance. The solar energy powered grass cutter is a robotic vehicle with capability of cutting grass without the need of any human supervision. It can also turn itself away from any obstacle present in its path.

Electrostatic Energized self cleaning of Cutter

Electrostatic Energized self cleaning of Cutter

Solar energy is the most abundant, easily and constantly available Renewable energy source. It is getting popular day by day and likely to be used everywhere in the near future, because of the transition of existing non-renewable energy sources to renewable energy sources and getting the advantage of save the environment.

The Indian Government aimed at achieving 20GW capacity by 2022, but it has been achieved 4 years earlier than as per the schedule and increased their aim to generate 100GW power using Solar Energy. One of the main problems with plant is that the accumulation of dust particles on the solar panels which causes the reduction in efficiency of the generation.

The current available methods to clean solar panels require man power and huge amount of water and very expensive cleaning equipment. But the scarcity of water is increasing day by day in the regions where the solar plants likely to be installed.

In order to avoid unnecessary waste of water and any kind of abrasion on the panels while using brushes or robots while cleaning. We have developed Electron Deflector (ED) screens for cleaning purpose. When high AC voltage is applied to the ED screen the dust particles gets charged and levitates towards the edges of the screen/panels and their by removing the dust on the solar panels.

Solar Powered Forest Fire Detection and Mitigation

Forest is a piece of land with many trees. Many animals need forest to live and survive. The forest fire is a type of disaster which create a great deal of environmental impacts due to which their early detection is very vital at the current appearance. The application of this project to detect the forest fire and fast operation in detecting and send information for infinite distance (world wide by cloud) to the forest officers to mitigate the forest fire.

Poornima Harish

Poornima, Lakshman’s eldest daughter, graduated from SSIT Electrical Engineering department in 1990. After working at the National Aeronautical Lab, she married Harish Bevinahally and moved to the USA. Poornima earned a master’s degree in computer science from Villanova University and had successful careers in financial services and Pharmaceutical industry.

Poornima took an active role in the career development of women through the Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association.

She passionately supported charitable causes helping underprivileged communities in India. Poornima is best remembered as a caring wife & mother of two, sister, daughter and a great friend by many who were touched by her.

Lakshman and Poornima’s connections to Tumkur and SSIT have resulted in this scholarship to assist students who excel in their passion for learning and have a genuine financial need to pursue education at this great institution.
